Assassination of King Zanac

Vol. 14, sometime in Years 3–5 after the transfer: as the Sorcerer Kingdom's army closed in on the capital, Prince Zanac, who held real power, met Ainz in front of the lines and, on returning to his own camp, was killed by rebel nobles who wanted to surrender.

Zanac mobilized the troops of nearby nobles and even imprisoned criminals, raising an army of about 400,000, and deployed it on a plain about half a day from the capital to meet the Sorcerer Kingdom's army.
On the day the armies faced off, Ainz and Zanac held talks; Japanese sources summarize Zanac's view of the Sorcerer King: frightening in appearance, yet no different from ordinary people in "wanting the people he cares about to be happy."
Zanac was killed by rebels after returning to his camp; the rebels swore loyalty to Ainz, only to be sent, along with their families, to the torturer Neuronist Painkill.
About an hour after the talks, the Sorcerer Kingdom's army, commanded by Cocytus with Mare as his second, annihilated the Kingdom's army.
Zanac's equipment for the decisive battle: the Amulet of Immortality, the Guardian Armor, and the Gauntlets of Endurance.
Other sources state that the killers were mercenaries hired by nobles; Ainz had his head properly buried (Vol. 14); whether he did so out of respect for Zanac, and whether this betrayal made him abandon all pity for the Kingdom, is unverified; Ainz's policy was to kill about 90% of the Kingdom's people (Vol. 14).

Notes

Japanese sources give Zanac the epithet "The Last King of the Vaiself Royal Family," and his class levels include "King (General) Lv1"; in the author's ranking of "how capable the kings are" in the Vol. 12 afterword, he is tied for 4th with Pe Riyuro.
