Royal Tournament

御前試合

World & HistoryBattles & Events

A martial tournament held before the king in the Re-Estize Kingdom several years before the main story (exact year unknown; 4 years earlier in the Web novel); Gazef Stronoff won it, and Brain Unglaus suffered his first defeat.

  • A martial tournament held in the king's presence, called a "gozen-jiai" in the Japanese original; the Japanese sources' timeline places it before the main story without giving a year, while the Web novel says 4 years earlier
  • Gazef, a commoner, won after a fierce bout with Brain in the final; Brain, a genius swordsman who had never lost before, suffered his first defeat and from then on sought only to grow stronger
  • By this tournament Gazef had already developed his original martial art [Fourfold Slash of Light]; Brain later learned it too and combined it with [Field] and [God Flash] to create the secret sword [Nail Clipper]
  • After his victory, Gazef was forcibly taken as a disciple by former adamantite-rank adventurer Vesture and inherited the "ultimate martial art"
  • Other confirmed participants: Gagaran of the Blue Roses fought Gazef in a match and lost (manga Vol. 9, chapter 27); the worker Gringham lost to Brain in the quarterfinals
  • The champion later became the King's direct retainer as "Warrior Captain of the Kingdom," leading the warrior troop; because opposition to granting Gazef knighthood (a noble rank for one generation) was so strong, the King created the post of "Warrior Captain" especially for him
  • The tournament originally let nobles show off their retainers' might, but as the nobles' men lost to commoners again and again, the nobles lost interest and the tournament shrank year by year (unverified)

Notes

According to the Gazef entry in Japanese sources, Gazef thought Brain would surpass him within a few years.
