Races & CreaturesMajor Races

The top race for undead magic casters; it is Ainz Ooal Gown's final race and the source of the series' title.

  • It occasionally appears as a placed monster in YGGDRASIL's hardest dungeons and uses the most vicious top-tier magic; as a monster it is at least level 80.
  • Appearance: a skeletal mage with no skin or flesh, with dark-red points of light burning in its hollow eye sockets and a black halo behind its head (unverified).
  • Related monsters: Overlord Wiseman (magic-specialized, level 90; Ainz can create one as a lieutenant by spending experience), Overlord Cronos Master (time-related abilities), Overlord General (skilled at commanding undead armies).
  • Ainz's lineage in the light novels: Skeleton Mage 15 → Elder Lich 10 → (presumed Night Lich) → Overlord 5.
  • Ainz's lineage in the Web novel: Skeleton Wizard 15 → Lich 10 → Demilich 5 → Overlord 10.
  • In the racial-level classification of Japanese sources, Overlord falls under the "Skeleton Mage line," alongside Overlord Wiseman, Overlord Cronos Master, and Overlord General (Vol. 10 p. 332) and the Lv68 Elemental Skull (Vol. 14 p. 412)
  • In the New World, a "Night Lich" is a being beyond the Elder Lich; it can use 6th-tier magic, is highly intelligent, and ranks among the strongest locals (side story-175); it is presumed to be Ainz's third race in the light novels
  • An Elder Lich is a Lv22 monster; according to a Web novel comment reply, a character can become an Elder Lich as a Skeleton Mage of level 10+ holding a "Book of the Dead," or with a magic class of level 30+ by holding Necronomicon-type books and clearing a specific event (Vol. 4 p. 210)

Notes

"Demilich" is also the name of a D&D monster; the light novels may have changed it to "Night Lich" for copyright reasons.
