Attack on the Sorcerer Kingdom's Transport

魔導国の食糧支援部隊襲撃

World & HistoryBattles & Events

Vol. 14, sometime in Years 3–5 after the transfer (estimated): Baron Philip of the Kingdom's New Faction attacked the Sorcerer Kingdom's food convoy bound for the Holy Kingdom, which gave the Sorcerer Kingdom its pretext to declare war on the Kingdom and destroy it.

  • Philip was originally the third son of the baronial house of Montserrat; his eldest brother died in the Katze Plains massacre (his second brother had died of illness), so he became head of the house and, with Hilma's backing, leader of the New Faction
  • After taking over his domain he governed it poorly, and its food production fell; from fellow faction members Baron Delvin and Baron Rokerlen, he learned that the Sorcerer Kingdom was stockpiling food in the capital and sending food aid to the Holy Kingdom along the highway
  • Philip reasoned that if the Sorcerer Kingdom's food in the capital disappeared, crop prices would rise and he would become a hero for striking at the Sorcerer Kingdom, so he proposed the attack and carried it out
  • He appeared in grand style in the convoy's path; the convoy fell into confusion and fled without a fight, and the attack "succeeded"
  • The Sorcerer Kingdom then used this as grounds to declare war on the Kingdom, which was reduced to rubble; Philip and the two barons, along with the people of their domains, were "dealt with" by Albedo (Vol. 15 hints that he is still alive in the Frozen Prison)
  • Albedo had originally planned, with the Eight Fingers' cooperation, to use famine to incite the Kingdom's people to revolt and to use the revolt as a pretext for war (Ainz called it the "carrot-and-stick operation"), but Philip's premature move upset the plan (unverified)
  • Philip took 50 of his people to Baron Delvin's domain to join the two barons' troops (about 200 conscripts in all)

Notes

While many great minds were left baffled, Ainz alone guessed the truth behind Philip's outrage by thinking "like an ordinary person." Among readers, "Philip" has become shorthand for "an idiot who thinks he's clever."
