Races & CreaturesNotable Monsters & Summons

A skeletal beast undead of difficulty 100–150 that emits a repeatable instant-death aura and grows stronger and heals by devouring souls.

  • Appearance: a bone beast (bone horse) wrapped in mist instead of flesh, with pus-yellow and bright-green lights flickering in the mist.
  • Abilities: an area aura of instant death and fear; it is temporarily strengthened after instantly killing a target (soul eating), and it can eat souls to restore health.
  • Legend says that a city of over 100,000 in a beastman nation of the central continent lost 95% of its population to three Soul Eaters and was abandoned as the "Silent City."
  • The Slane Theocracy believes a single one can destroy a city or small nation, and that countering it takes at least a caster of 3rd-tier magic.
  • Ainz makes them with "Create Middle Tier Undead," and they can be ridden; in the Sorcerer Kingdom they pull carts in place of donkeys, and in Vol. 9 all 500 of the Sorcerer Kingdom's troops (about 200 spiked-armor warriors and about 300 leather-armored soldiers) rode them into battle.
  • In YGGDRASIL, a player of the right level would be killed instantly only once in several hundred tries, so the ability was nearly meaningless.
  • The series uses both "Create" and "Make" for the middle-tier undead creation skill, but the light novels' form should be "Create" throughout; sources consider the Soul Eater one of the weaker Create Middle Tier Undead options
  • The fear aura and the instant-death aura are both its abilities (Vol. 10 p. 233); it is ridden at Vol. 11 p. 319
  • In the Holy Kingdom arc, to compare "making undead from corpses" with "only harvesting souls," Ainz had Soul Eaters wipe out demi-humans with "soul eating" as an experiment (Vol. 13 p. 148)
  • Boris, a former adamantite-rank adventurer of the Kingdom and captain of Marquis Raeven's guard, told the Marquis the legend of the "Silent City"; when Gustav saw Soul Eaters pulling carts in the Sorcerer Kingdom, he declared that they were not undead anyone could control

Notes

It was slated to appear in anime season 3 but was cut, and it finally appeared in season 4; the Web novel has no Soul Eaters.
