Skeletal Dragon
骨の竜(スケリトル・ドラゴン)
Races & CreaturesNotable Monsters & Summons
A dragon-shaped undead about 3 m long made of countless human bones; it negates all magic of 6th tier and below and is considered the natural enemy of magic casters.
- Since almost no one in the New World can use 6th-tier magic or higher, it is treated as a monster with "absolute magic resistance"; it also negates detection magic.
- Its subjugation difficulty in the Web novel is about 48; it has the usual skeletal resistance to piercing and can fly, and its steel-hard bone wings double as weapons.
- A single mithril-rank team can fight one, and Gagaran could barely win even against two; Fluder cannot win in a pure spell battle (he can with summoning magic).
- In Vol. 2, Khajiit of the secret society Zurrernorn summoned two, which Narberal destroyed in one blow with a twinned, maximized 7th-tier [Chain Dragon Lightning]
- They occasionally appear on the Katze Plains, including large individuals over 4 m (The Phantom Ship of Katze Plains).
- Its magic resistance lets allied spells through and negates hostile ones (Arcadia comment reply); even undead-detection spells cannot find it if they are detection or information magic
- Its bone wings are iron-hard with blade-like tips, so its wingbeats themselves are attacks; it looks like a four-legged dragon with a long neck, wings, and a tail, but it never once uses a breath attack in the story (Vol. 2 p. 318, The Phantom Ship (Part 1))
- Clementine, a warrior who specializes in piercing, cannot beat one (author's afterword); in the Web novel, creating one requires a two-month grand ritual, and the Empire's advisory says that if one is found, people should simply watch it and hire skilled adventurers
Notes
In the Web novel, three hundred Skeletal Dragons served as mounts for Death Knights in the massacre.
