Races & CreaturesRace Classification

YGGDRASIL broadly divides its playable races into three groups—Humanoid, demi-human, and Heteromorphic—and the post-transfer world keeps this distinction.

  • Humanoid: humans, wood elves, dwarves, and others; they have no racial levels and can put all 100 levels into classes.
  • Demi-human: "human-like" races quite different from humans in appearance, such as goblins, ogres, and lizardmen; they have racial levels and higher physical abilities.
  • Heteromorphic: races that fit neither group, such as undead, slimes, demons, angels, and dragons; the exact criteria are undisclosed.
  • Humanoids and demi-humans have lifespans; in the game, Heteromorphic races stop aging once they have grown to a certain point.
  • Humanoid races can interbreed with one another (the Elf King says humans and elves can have children), but Humanoids and demi-humans cannot.
  • In the New World, demi-humans and Heteromorphic races apparently can have children: the Magelos Nasrene intended to bear the child of Jaldabaoth (a demon); Queen Draudillon of the Dragon Kingdom descends from the offspring of a dragon and a human.
  • In YGGDRASIL, players and NPCs have strictly assigned class and racial levels, while naturally spawned or summoned monsters show only a "monster level"; the game clearly distinguishes the two.
  • YGGDRASIL has 700 races including higher races (420 in the Web novel); like class levels, each racial level caps at 15, 10, or 5
  • A character can switch to a completely different race partway through, but this requires items and several other conditions, and there is no switching back
  • Penalties for choosing a Heteromorphic race: killing one does not count as PK for the attacker, and some cities are off-limits, some classes unavailable, and some items unequippable; players therefore see Heteromorphic races as an "expert's choice," but their stats grow faster and their strong skills become even stronger

Notes

Author Maruyama believes that wars between races in the New World would never end, and that even if one race unified the world, internal differences would spark war again (from the author's blog, unverified).
