Magic ItemsItem Grades
Single-use items with a spell sealed in advance; whether someone can use one depends on their class's spell list.
- YGGDRASIL: ordinary parchment can hold spells only up to the 2nd tier, while dragon hide can hold the 10th tier; a scroll is made by drawing a magic circle with melted YGGDRASIL gold coins and then casting the spell
- A scroll's power is usually fixed at the minimum level; a 10th-tier spell from a minimum-level scroll cannot break through Shalltear's magic resistance
- The user must know the spell or have it on their class spell list; thief-type skills or talents can bypass this rule
- Even with Nazarick's techniques, New World parchment can hold only 1st-tier spells; the "parchment" Demiurge found (actually human skin) can hold spells up to the 3rd tier
- In the New World, a 1st-tier scroll costs 1 gold coin and 10 silver coins, about 1.5 months of a commoner's income; the Slane Theocracy has a secret technique for making 4th-tier scrolls
- Elves make scrolls from special tree bark, limited to druid spells of the 3rd tier or below (Vol. 16)
- A scroll's power depends on the maker's skill, but scrolls are usually made at the minimum level and fixed there (Vol. 3 p. 350)
- New World scrolls are made differently from YGGDRASIL's; Titus called the fact that local parchment holds only 1st-tier spells "refined, in a sense" (Vol. 8 p. 311)
Notes
Scrolls and staves can hold [Perfect Unknowable], but wands cannot (BD bonus novel).
